Here at JW Services Inc. of NC, we offer slate roofing as one of your roofing material options. We do not, however, offer the materials or installation of synthetic or rubber slate roofing options. This may lead you to ask the question of “Why choose a real slate roof over the other synthetic and rubber options?” Here is why a real slate roof is the way to go.
Real slate is a shale-type rock (sedimentary rock that is fairly homogeneous in composition). Nick named a “forever roof,” you can except this roof to survive for the rest of your lifetime. Expect up to 100 years of life from this roofing material — that means that slate roofs can survive up to 5 times as long as most other roofing materials before needing to be replaced. That certainly justifies the cost if you can budget for it! And if the lifetime of the roofing material isn’t persuasive enough in and of itself, slate roofs are naturally mold and fire resistant. Those are excellent features in such a critical aspect of your home.
In contrast, rubber shingles are another name for synthetic slate roofing material (which we do not offer). The disadvantages you’ll have to live with if you choose this type of roofing option rather than a slate roof are a lack of fire resistance (not a great feature in a home building material), awful smell during installation (though it will fade eventually), and a fairly significant expense.
Synthetic slate roofing is much less durable and strong than the kind of durability and strength you can naturally expect from a real slate roof. Contact us today to find out more!
